How to Decorate the Tops of Kitchen Cabinets
Many of today’s home designs are more spacious and open. One of the newest trends for kitchen design allows a certain amount of space between the tops of cabinets and the ceiling. Most of this space measures anywhere from about 18 to 24-inches in depth.
Instructions
- Determine if a theme is desired for the space. For example, if the kitchen is decorated in a coffee house theme, that same design could easily be carried into the space atop kitchen cabinets. If a specific theme isn’t being used, that leaves the space open for an interpretative design that fits into the overall home’s motif.
- Choose a color scheme is to be used for the space. If a theme is chosen, then chances are that it will drive the color scheme. On the other hand, if no theme is chosen, then colors might be chosen to fit the kitchen’s overall color scheme or to blend with that of the entire home.
- Decide what will be used in a themed space. For example, for a coffee house theme, one might choose to decorate the tops of cabinets with a coffee mug collection; with different type of coffee makers (modern and antique); or with different types of coffee cans.
- Settle on a kitchen scheme for a space that is thematic in design. For example, if the kitchen doesn’t have a specific theme, then choose decor that fits in with a general kitchen design–such as lining the space with beautiful plates or with unique and unusual kitchen appliances.
- Use decor that is befitting of the home’s overall design. For example, if the home is full of beautiful mosaic vases, candle holders and plates, then use same of those same types of things atop the kitchen cabinets.
- Try to keep everything for the cabinet tops generic in design. Line the tops of cainets with silk plants or flowers or choose a few pieces of beautiful generic pottery.
- Mix and match ideas to add interest and depth into the room. For example, use both baskets of greenery and a few colorful plates or mix mosaic pieces with pottery for wonderful texture.
- Apply a wallpaper border near the ceiling only around the cabinet space. This will add an extra sense of depth to anything you choose to highlight on the cabinets.
- Paint the wall space between the top of kitchen cabinets and the ceiling a different color to bring the eye to the space effortlessly. This will help highlight whatever is chosen for display within the space. Another option is to bring the ceiling color down into the space to create an unusal depth to the space.
